Thoughts on NFL Draft

The Houston Texans just screwed up. How do you pick Mario Williams over Reggie Bush? Don’t get me wrong, Williams is a straight up stud, but Bush is perhaps Barry Sanders.

Other first-round thoughts.
The Cardinals just made the pick that will finally make them a true playoff threat. Next to Bush, Matt Lienhart was the best offensive player in the draft. After Kurt Warner is injured next year, he will be starting and earn rookie of the year honors.

Vince Young is the next Akili Smith, the Oregon quarterback who choked, not Steve McNair. In five years, Tennessee will drop Young after several attempts of making him an NFL quarterback.

Santonio Holmes was the best middle-of-the-pack pick. He will make a nice No. 2 receiver to Hines Ward now that Randle El is gone.

  • Fred,

I think you are partially right, the Texans screwed up bad. However, I disagree with your predictions about Bush and Young.

First, don't ever ever ever compare Reggie Bush to Barry Sanders. Sanders carried his team in college and in the NFL, and Bush rode his team's coat tails all the way to the second pick of the draft. He wasn't even the best running back on his team. Plus, I don't think he can ever carry the workload of an NFL feature tail back.

On the other hand, you can always find a place for a 6-5 233 pound quarterback. This is another individual that learned how to carry a team. A born leader, albiet, he is quiet. He will learn to play the QB position, but I envision the Titans running set s to get him involved in the offense. He is too good of an individual weapon to keep off the field. Plus, he might end up playing a different position, if QB doesn't pan out.

Pat Jones was asked on his show, "What do you think about the wonderlic test?" He defered that question to the USC Defensive Coaching Staff.

  • Pat Jones has his own show?

  • I am going to once again agree with Dillon on this one. However I am not sure the Texans made such a big mistake in not picking Bush. I really think this guy is a little overhyped, yes he did some amazing things on the field, but I still ask how good is he if he can't win the starting running back job at USC?

I totally disagree with the Vince Young observation by Fred. I think this guy knows how to win and will find a way on the field in the NFL and make a difference somehow.

I am also happy to see the Broncos are seeing the light and understand they can't win a title with Jake the Snake and finally picked a QB, I am not sold on Cutler, but he is worth a shot.
