Trouble in OSU basketball?

It’s not shaping up to be a good year for Oklahoma State sports. Just an hour after I saw that the Cowboys defense gave up 14 fourth-quarter points to Kansas State and lost 31-27, I read Sean Sutton dismissed Gary Flowers for violating team rules. (Flowers apparently likes the chronic.)

Flowers joins former forward Torre Johnson of the OSU castaways. Sutton would not comment on either dismissal other than to say “I like the guy. I wish him the best. It’s in the best interest of the program that we part ways…. Blah, blah, blah.”

Throw these two dismissals on top of Eddie Sutton’s drunken driving incident and you’ve got one troubled basketball team. I sure hope Sean can keep the team focused. But the cynic in me says we’ll just suck this year and our program will go down the tubes.

I hope I’m wrong.

  • I waited a while to respond to this, because I wanted to hear other people’s opinions first. After realizing that isn’t going to happen, here it goes.

It isn’t hard to replace an unproven backup SF in college basketball, but loosing two backup SFs is difficult to handle. This is how I see the starting lineup being for OSU basketball:

    PG: Eaton
    SG: Curry
    SF: Dove
    PF: Boggan
    C: Cooper

When OSU wants to run, they will sit Cooper and start Harris. The other main backups will be Jamaal Brown at PG/SG, Monds at PF/C, and if Muonelo lives up to expectations, he should see playing time as well.

So, to answer your question, I do not think OSU basketball is in trouble because they kicked Flowers off the team, however compounding Flowers with Johnson makes me worry.

However there is something more serious to worry about. Mike Holder took over as the OSU Athletic Director, and he is implementing his no leniency policy all over sports just as he did with his golfers. Well that policy works fine and dandy, when you are checking Scott Verplank’s golf bag for a 9mm or making sure that Charles Howell doesn’t get into fights.

I have a good feeling that Holder made this decision, not Sutton. I am mixed with emotions on who to side with on this. On one hand, I want OSU to be strict when they discipline, but at the same time I am realistic on human nature, and I understand that athletes (excluding golfers) usually have a few bad habits. To remain competitive, OSU should remain strict on their policies, but you can be strict without I-35ing the guilty.

I can’t remember all of the details of the Hank Kuehne story, but I think after rehab he wasn’t even allowed back on the OSU golf team. Now that is a hard ass.
